Headache and Nausea during Dialysis for Kidney Disease Patients

Dialysis can filter wastes and fluid from body to keep the blood clean. However, it has some side effects in dialysis. Headache and nausea are two major troublesome issues for people on dialysis.

　　There is a variety of causes of headache in dialysis.High blood pressure is a major culprit of this condition and it is mainly attributed to high building up of fluid in body.
　　Rapid fluctuation of blood volume in body is also a cause of headache in dialysis.In hemodialysis,blood needs to circulate outside of the body.If the fluid is filtered out of body too rapidly, it may make the patients experience headache.It is also a cause of nausea in dialysis.

　　Nausea is commonly seen in both dialysis and non-dialysis patients.A significant cause is high accumulation of uremic toxins in body.The toxins may be decomposed into ammonia which can irritate gastrointestinal tract, resulting in nausea.
　　In addition, brain edema also can cause nausea in dialysis. The toxins in brain can not be removed as fast as those in other parts, which cause brain tissue to pull in extra fluid,thus resulting in brain edema.Brain edema can cause nausea and headache.

　　Besides headache and nausea,the patients on dialysis may also experience itching,muscle cramps etc.
